Team building at its best

Team building at its best

Groups volunteer at the Food Bank mornings and afternoons Monday to Friday and evenings Monday to Thursday.  Once your group has been scheduled for a shift, the group contact person is emailed a confirmation letter.

Please contact Volunteer Resources to book your group’s volunteering experience.
Call 403-253-2059 Ext.2 or email.
We require the group contact person to complete the following tasks prior to their group volunteer shift:

  • Share the contents of the letter, including the link to the on-line health and safety orientation, with all group members.
  • Sign and fax in the acceptance of Calgary Food Bank requirements.
  • Ensure all group members have completed the health and safety orientation and printed their certificates. These need to be brought to the volunteer shift.
  • Confirm final group numbers with the Volunteer Resources team at least one week prior to the volunteer shift.

What you need to know

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the times of the volunteer shifts?

Morning shifts are 8:15 – 11:30 am, afternoon shifts are 12:15 – 3:00 pm and evening shifts are 5:45 – 8 pm.

In each of these time slots, we have two volunteer shifts where we can accommodate volunteer groups. These shifts do work in different areas of the building.

Do you have weekend or additional shifts?

The Calgary Food Bank is open some Saturdays late in November and in December, and occasionally during the year as the need arises.

Because of increased client demand and the number of donations received additional shifts are added during the week in December. This may enable larger groups of up to 30 volunteers to schedule a shift.

Due to additional interest in group volunteering during November and December we have a ‘wait list’. Volunteer Resources typically starts scheduling from this in October on a first come first serve basis.

What if we need to cancel or change a shift?

We understand people live busy lives and plans can change. If you need to make a change in your shift, please let us know as soon as possible. Last minute cancellations mean the work planned for that day cannot be completed, ultimately impacting our ability to supply emergency hampers to those in need. However, given enough notice, if you do need to decrease you group numbers or cancel your shift, we can often find volunteers to fill those available spots.

Before increasing the number of volunteers in your group, please check with Volunteer Resources. We do have a set maximum of volunteers per shift and may not be able to accommodate extra group members.

How do we schedule a shift?

Choose some dates and times that your group would like to volunteer. Email or phone (403-253-2059 option #2), with this information along with group contact name, contact phone number, email address , team name and number of volunteers in the group.

We do have volunteer shifts that run at the same time, but that work in different areas of the building. Being amenable to dividing your group into the two shifts may increase your options.

If there is availability on your requested day/time, you will be emailed a confirmation.  If there is no availability, you will be contacted with some alternate suggestions. Shift availability, including the number of volunteers we can accommodate per shift will vary depending on workload or other individual and group bookings.

Please note that we are NOT able to ‘hold’ or ‘pencil in’ dates.  Scheduling is on a first come first serve basis.

Some long standing groups have a ‘regular’ volunteer schedule.  Because of this not all shifts are available each day.

What will we be doing when volunteering?

During the morning and afternoon, our volunteers are typically sorting perishable and non-perishable foods and assembling specialty hampers. In the evening, volunteers are typically sorting perishable food items and assembling our emergency food hampers. Duties will vary depending on client demand and what has been donated.

How many people can volunteer on each shift?

When scheduling our volunteer shifts we consider work load, available work space and our health and safety policies and procedures. We have a set maximum number of volunteers that can be scheduled on shift. This number varies throughout the year depending on our need. Each shift is typically made up of 70% individual volunteers and 30% group volunteers. From January to mid-November, we schedule groups with 2 to 15 volunteers per shift. From mid- November through December, due to an increase in our workload, we may be able to schedule groups of up to 30 volunteers on some shifts.

At the time of scheduling we can only schedule an EXACT number of volunteers, NOT a range such as 3 – 7.

How old do you have to be to volunteer?

Youth must be at least 12 years old to volunteer in the warehouse. For groups with youth between 12 and 15 years old, a ratio of 1 adult for every 5 youth is required. Each adult is included in the total number of volunteers in that group.

A youth waiver will be attached to the group contact’s confirmation email. This must be signed by an adult or guardian for each youth and brought to the shift. Please note, groups with youth members are unable to volunteer in some areas of the warehouse.

What if someone has already done their training?

Volunteers are asked to update their Health and Safety course every year. An individual who has completed the course within the past year and has already given us their certificate does not need to produce the certificate again. We are able to access their completion record.

“I love to bring new teams to work together at the Calgary Food Bank.  Addiction treatment programs require group trust and accountability.  I found that nothing builds teams faster than working together to help other people. It really helps to advance trust and mutual support.”
