You need to be a minimum of 12 years old to volunteer in the warehouse.

Sorting Line

Volunteers sort donations from community events and donation boxes, grouping them into their categories like canned tomatoes, soup and peanut butter. You will be working with up to 35 other volunteers on an assembly line.

Building Hampers

Building the non-perishable portion of our food hampers is an essential part of our operations. You will be working on an assembly line with up to 30 other volunteers to create hampers that follow Canada’s Food Guide.

Monday – Thursday

Celiac Hamper Sorter

Working with a team of 5, you will be sorting and identifying gluten-free food items for the Celiac food hampers. You must have knowledge of Celiac disease for this role. Ideally we are looking for individuals that have Celiac Disease that can commit to the last Tuesday afternoon every month. You will be resorting the gluten-free pallets of food coming from the sorting line. The main purpose of this job is to make sure the products put into our Celiac hampers are Celiac friendly and good quality.

Breakfast Club

Working with a team of 3-4 people you will assemble perishable and non-perishable food for schools with breakfast programs.

Distribution

Once the hampers are built they are distributed to our clients. You will be part of the amazing team working to get the food to our clients. Volunteers offer additional food items and assist clients with packing up food. You will working with up to 20 people on an assembly line.

Distribution Assistant

You will be assisting warehouse staff  to prepare for hamper distribution to clients by stocking the cooler and organizing the food. The role will be working with the distribution supervisor and one other volunteer.

Baby Room

We believe that every child deserves a strong start in life; and nutritious food choices are an important building block. A Baby Hamper is provided with a food hamper of any client with a baby. Working with up to 4 other people, you will be preparing baby hampers with formula, food and/or diapers. As well as handing out the hampers to clients.

Birthday Room

Any child turning 1 to 12 years-old is eligible for a Birthday Party Kit if their birthday within 3 weeks from the date the household is picking up a Food Hamper. These Birthday Party Kits are designed as a ‘Party in a Bag’ and generally include cake mix, icing, age & gender appropriate toy, and lots more! You will be working independently to build the birthday party kits.

Greeter

As a greeter, you will be welcoming clients who are coming to pick-up their hampers. You will be helping them understand the hamper pick-up process and monitoring the client wait area.

Agency Greeter

Working independently you will be greeting and assisting agencies that are picking up hampers to deliver to clients’ homes.

Agency Volunteer

You will be assisting warehouse staff to stock items in the Food Link area and assisting the agencies who come to pick-up food for their clients.

Monday – Friday
8 am – 12 pm*

Volunteer adding items to food hampers.

Multi Duty

Your tasks will vary depending on the operations of the warehouse and the food donated. Tasks may include; sorting produce and other bulk food items, cardboard compacting, shelf stocking and warehouse clean up. You will be working with up to 15 people in this role.

Crate Washing

Working independently or with one other volunteer you will be washing the crates using an industrial dishwasher.

Receiver

You will be assisting donors with unloading donations from their vehicles, weighing donations and writing receipts. Receivers move the donations to the proper storage areas and help organize empty crates on pallets. You will be working along side the multi-duty volunteers in the warehouse.

Depot Preparation

Volunteers will help to prepare hampers that will be delivered to offsite depots around the city of client pick-up. You will be working with 3-4 other people in this role.

Depot Completion

Volunteers will help to prepare hampers that will be delivered to offsite depots around the city of client pick-up. You will be working with 3-4 other people in this role.

Depot Volunteer

Depots are an integral part of serving our clients. We have offsite depots around the city to ensure people can get the food they need. You will organize the food hampers (by adding perishables to each hamper), and distribute food hampers to clients as they come in for pick-up.

Shuttle van Driver

Working independently you will be driving the Calgary Food Bank van, transporting volunteers to and from the volunteer parking lot to the warehouse.

A Standard class 5 license is required, volunteers will drive a standard size vehicle. A driver’s abstract and criminal check is required for this role.

Swamper

You will be assisting the drivers to deliver hampers and food at offsite depots, events and other locations around the city.

Driver Assistant

Driver Assistants travel with staff drivers and play a huge part in helping to give directions and load and unload trucks. Staff always make sure to show the proper way to lift and carry heavy items, as well as the proper way to use a pallet jack.

Volunteer Driver

Working independently or with a swamper you will be picking up and delivering food and hampers at various locations across the city.

A driver’s abstract and criminal check is required for this role.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I complete my court ordered volunteer hours at the Food Bank?

Yes, we are able to accept most people into our program but it is dependent on the charge. Registration for court ordered volunteer hours is:
Tuesday 10 am - 1 pm
Wednesday 3 - 5 pm
Thursday 1- 3 pm

How do I become a volunteer?

It's an easy 3 step process!

  1.  Review the volunteer opportunities.
  2. Fill out the online application form.
  3. Attend the volunteer orientation session.

How old do you have to be to volunteer?

To volunteer in our warehouse youth must be at least 12 years old. Youth 12 – 15 years old are required to volunteer with an adult, youth 16 years old and up can volunteer on their own. For special event volunteering, youth as young as 8 years old can join an adult.

What is the time commitment?

We have volunteers who are able to commit to a weekly schedule, but we also have volunteers who come in on an occasional basis when their schedule allows. Shifts are 2.5 to 3.5 hours long. Please review the specific volunteer opportunities for details.

Can I just drop in to volunteer if I have free time?

We love the enthusiasm of our volunteers but to ensure that we have enough work for everyone and coverage on all shifts all volunteers must schedule their shifts. Please make sure you schedule your shift ahead of time.
