Hello and Happy April!

Renovations Update:
Last month we wrote about the renovations underway at the main warehouse to meet the evolving needs of people experiencing food insecurity. We will begin renovating our hamper distribution area in May. During this time, hamper pickup will occur along the west side of the building, by the loading docks. This change will be effective early May and people accessing hampers will receive additional instructions for hamper pick up during this time.

Service Update:
In response to feedback from the people we serve, our partners, program evaluations, and from Calgary’s social sector, we are excited to announce that our current database, which many of your use to request food hampers for your clients, will be getting an upgrade! This evolution will improve ease-of use, promote client dignity, and increase opportunities for collaboration. We are still in the early stages of development, but keep your eyes peeled for details of new features over the upcoming months.

Service Launch:
We have introduced a new team of Resource Volunteers to improve awareness of community organizations for the people that we serve! These volunteers will use a questionnaire that is also available on our website to understand someone’s situation and find the best community organizations to support them. This is something that the Calgary Food Bank has always done to support people with the root cause of their unique experience with food insecurity. This new questionnaire will allow us to be more intentional about the referrals we provide! Click ‘Read More’ below to check out this questionnaire!

Dates of Closure:
April 15-18 (Easter Long Weekend), May 13 (Staff Training), and May 23 (Victoria Day).

Bare Bottoms Diaper Drive

Did you know that one Baby Hamper contains 7 to 10 days’ worth of diapers, wipes, baby food and formula?

The cost of diapers can quickly add up and become overwhelming for parents already struggling to make ends meet. Throughout the month of May, the Bare Bottoms Diaper Drive will collect diapers and funds to help fill more than 100 Baby Hampers every month.

Please see the below message from The Good Samaritan Society:

“Antibacterial Wipes are available to charities/agencies at no cost, large quantities are available. Charities/agencies must agree to give them free to people in need, without bias and distribute them unconditionally. Boxes are available for pickup in Calgary NE. Do Not Exit Your Vehicle

How Hamper Eligibility is Determined

During our Emergency Food Hamper intake process, we gather information on the household’s income and expenses. We collect this information for two main reasons. The first being to ensure that we are prioritizing our services to low-income households who otherwise could not afford food themselves. But more importantly, this information paints a picture of the financial constraints that might head someone to accessing emergency food supports, such as the Ward Profiles you saw last month.

Visit our community page to learn more about all our programs so you can see how we can help you and your clients.
