Why my mom left a bequest to the food bank ...

In 1948, a few years after WW11 ended, my mom sailed with her family to Canada from England. The first years weren’t easy – only once did she share with me that they often went hungry. She told me about the fear she experienced, and how alone she felt. There were few her family could turn to for support.

Over the years, mom raised her own family and became a vital member of her community. She regularly donated to the Calgary Food Bank too – I guess she never forgot those early years and didn’t want anyone else experiencing what she had gone through.

Mom passed away recently. In her will, she gave money to the food bank. It didn’t really occur to me until then the depth of her feeling and the suffering she must have endured. I’m so proud of her.

In honour of my mom, I have now chosen to donate monthly. It would seem mom’s legacy is really more than the money she left behind. It’s the example of caring she set for her family and for her community.

Here are some reasons people need help

Frank and Violet

Frank and Violet are seniors. They worked hard their whole lives, raised a family, and paid their taxes. They’re proud of the life they’ve built and their independence. Unfortunately, their pension doesn’t go as far as they thought it would. Sometimes they have a hard time making ends meet and have to come to the Food Bank to tide them over.

Gerald

Gerald is a single father of two young children. He was recently laid off and thought he had nowhere to turn. He feels ashamed for not being able to provide for his children. He comes to the Food Bank where he finds food and a referral to an employment agency. He now has a plan to get back on track and more importantly, he has hope.

Jen

Jen is a middle aged woman who has been in the work force for 38 years. She was in a terrible car accident and needs months to recover. She can no longer do her job. Her partner, who cannot cope with her injuries, left her. Within months, the life she had built fell apart. Her children and their families support her as much as they can, but it’s not quite enough. The Calgary Food Bank is here to offer her support and put her in touch with agencies that can help her rebuild her
life.
