City Wide Food Drive
The City Wide Food Drive has come and gone, but the donations will keep the shelves at the food bank stocked for the fall. This year, with the help of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and their partnering agencies and churches, we raised 400,000 pounds of non-perishable food in a single day. This is one of the largest volunteer events in Calgary and can see anywhere up to 10,000 volunteers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints community and more.
Last week, bags were left on doorstep in hope that households would donate food for the Saturday food drive. On the day of the City Wide Food Drive, thousands of volunteers drive around to dozens of communities and pick up each individual bag. There are many locations ready to take their collections, including the Westbrook area and Market Mall, and volunteers on the scene help unload the bags.
Cars were constantly lining up alongside the gaylords spread in lanes at the drop-off sites. Many of the volunteers knew one another and were eager to lend a helping hand whenever possible. Children, teenagers, parents and grandparents were all getting involved to help out on such an important day.
We're so thankful to have such tremendous support from all the groups and donors involved today. Calgary is working together to create a hunger-free community.
