What’s the Calgary Food Bank’s best kept secret?

Did you know the Calgary Food Bank supports not only families and individuals but also more than 150 community agencies through Food Link? Organizations from Inn From the Cold to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary and everything in between.

What is Food Link?

Food Link is the Calgary Food Bank’s program that provides agencies with bulk food items, personal hygiene and cleaning products. Agencies can provide meals and products to their clients, focusing their limited resources on their programming rather than sourcing food.

Where do the Food Link donations come from?

The majority of the products that are donated to Food Link come from you! Donations are also made by grocery stores, local food distribution companies and wholesale warehouses.

How are the donations divided between the Food Bank and Food Link clients?

Emergency hampers are still our priority but through our inventory and logistics process, we sort and allocate items for Food Link that will best meet the agencies needs. For example, a wholesale, bulk size jar of pickles would go to Food Link whereas the small jars of pickles would be added to the hampers for individual food bank clients.

The Impact Food Link has:

Through the Food Link program, the Calgary Food Bank has a greater reach into the community. Every month 500,000 meals and snacks are provided to many important programs and services. A total of 3.5 million lbs. of food move through Food Link annually, reducing the impact on the landfill and reducing overall costs.

How can you help?

Food and personal hygiene products can be donated to the Food Bank or to Food Link directly.

Items in need:

  • Canned soup (pop top cans)
  • Dry soups (Ichiban)
  • Kraft Dinner
  • Baked beans
  • Pasta and sauce
  • Feminine products
  • Disposable plates and cutlery

Remember:

Food Link provides for local agencies which require flats or wholesale boxes of product versus individual containers in order to reach more organizations within the community.
