Hunger doesn’t take summer vacations

If you haven’t already been charmed by 11-year-old Sutton Garner, by the end of this, you most certainly will be.

Sutton, with help from her mom and local agencies like us, formed a much-needed food initiative focused on kids who need access to healthy food during the summer months when schools, and their subsequent food programs, are out.

Sutton2She said the idea came to her after seeing classmates who used the school breakfast and lunch programs, thinking they probably wouldn’t have food during the summer break.

But she didn’t just notice, she took action.

“I just like helping kids and making sure they have the future that they need and want to have,” Sutton says. “I want to have a future that I can be successful in and I want them to have that chance too.”

Sutton spoke her concerns to her mother Bobbi Turko, and together they came up with I Can for Kids – a summer food drive and fundraising campaign to support the Calgary Food Bank and the families and kids who don’t have access to food programming outside schools.

After wowing us with a very personal and well-researched presentation on child hunger in our community, we jumped on board along with Woods Homes — a multi-service children’s mental health centre. Together with Save on Foods, we are working to get as much food to as many hungry children as possible.

Kids who don’t receive the necessary nutrition during their summer break can put them two months  academically behind their peers at the start of the school year. We couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with Sutton to try and meet the goal of helping provide 20,000 meals to hungry kids in our community.

Sutton hopes that this program will grow and expand in the years to come. “There are always going to be hungry kids, it’s not just going to be a one-time thing,” Sutton says. “It’s going to be for a long period of time and possibly forever.”

Five Save on Foods locations in Calgary and Cochrane have generously partnered with us to have I Can for Kids $5 pre-packed donations available through the months of June and July. Each pre-packed meal contains two kid-friendly meals.
