How the downturn affects the Calgary Food Bank

Since the layoffs began, we’ve been getting calls from reporters, donors and general public asking how the economy has affected our operations. And honestly, we couldn’t speak to any change then. Most people who asked that question left with a, “We’ll let you know.”

This is us letting you know.

As a social assistant non-profit, we tend to see the after effects of layoffs, budget cuts and general increases in the cost of living months after the initial incident. This means that as soon as the layoffs start, we’ll see a difference in our numbers about three to six months later.

March was the first major increase we’ve seen since the oil and gas sector started their layoffs in Fall 2014. April is still in full force but we expect an increase this month as well.
