The 8th Annual Empty Bowl Benefit

Every year, thousands of Calgarians go without basic food items many of us take for granted: milk for breakfast, a hot bowl of soup for lunch and household staples like rice and pasta. The Calgary Food Bank, U B the Artist and Brookfield Properties are teaming up for a creative solution to this problem. With your support, the 8th Annual Empty Bowl Benefit will put food in bowls that might otherwise go empty.

On Wednesday, April 16th celebrity painters (local media personalities, musicians, professional athletes and more) brought their artistic abilities and passion to help feed those in need in Calgary. U B the Artist supplied each of our celebrities with a bisque bowl to paint with a design of their own choosing.

The public and the media are invited to join us at the main floor of the Petro-Canada Centre, 111– 5th Ave SW, on Wednesday, April 16th from 10am to 2pm to encourage the celebrity painters.

Once the bowls are fired they will be on display for the nine-day online auction right here at www.calgaryfoodbank.com between April 24 and May 2. View the works of art and bid online for your favourites. This is when you’ll want to encourage all of your friends, family, and others to view the bowls and bid on their favourites. When the auction closes at 5pm on Friday, May 2, the highest bidder of each work of art will enjoy taking it home knowing that they will also be helping feed hungry Calgarians.

The main goal of this event is to raise awareness and funds for those experiencing emergency situations and hunger in our city.

All proceeds from the eighth annual Empty Bowl Benefit online auction go to the Calgary Food Bank.

A fun bonus is the mapped "Walk of the Stars"
Another way you can participate in the Empty Bowl Benefit is by donating a twoonie for a mapped walk leading you to the bowls displayed at several downtown locations. Attached to the map is a ballot so you can vote for your favourite bowl. Submitting a ballot automatically qualifies you for a cool prize! The People’s Choice Award will be announced the Monday following the auction close. ‘Walk of the Stars’ maps will be sold at the Bankers Hall Info Desk and The Calgary Tower from April 24 to May 2. Stay tuned for more details on where to get a map.

Together, we CAN help feed the hungry one bowl at a time.

Empty Bowl Benefit Online Auction
April 24 - May 2 at 5pm

Thank you to all who participated in the Empty Bowl Benefit. You helped raise $6,444 to feed hungry Calgarians.

To all our celebrity painters and partners this was only possible because of you. Thank you.

We're going to leave the bowls up here for a while, they're just so good looking!

Doodle Heart

The heart and flower on the inside of this bowl was a result of a doodle I was mindlessly drawing one day. Now I find myself doodling it more often. It makes me smile and I hope it will make others smile too.

I’m not originally from Calgary, but love the city so much, especially how willing people are to help others and the strong sense of community here. XL was in Calgary before so wanted to tie the city into the bowl.

Feeding the Nations

The flower represents the Food Bank, that is a source of food for different insects coming from all over, just like the nations in Calgary can come and be fed, regardless of who they are and where they come from.

I woke up feeling very positive and light on the day we painted. So, I tossed out my original plans and just went with it. And this year's bowl is the result. Not a masterpiece ...but I hope you like it.

Blessing

The Chinese symbol on my bowl means blessing. When I think about the Food Bank I don’t ever foresee being on the receiving end; but the truth of the matter is it doesn’t take much to put a family in a crisis situation, where they would have to choose between heating their home and putting dinner on the table. Many of us have been blessed in that we haven’t encountered a need to use the Food Bank. I hope you will help out as much as you can and ensure the Calgary Food Bank can continue to help out those in need – your donation is a blessing.
